About Dr. Hansen

For 40+ years Mike Hansen was the face of the Ohio Geological Survey. Although he never served as Chief and State Geologist, he was the most recognized, trusted, and accomplished staff member—the “go-to-person” for almost any outside group, including geologic societies and editors, journalists, naturalists, academics, and other organizations.

Dr. Hansen envisioned most of the important Survey initiatives that were established during his career at ODNR, and he doggedly pursued them until he acquired support from management, support from the staff, and funding to make these initiatives real. His career spanned a time period that included classic geologic investigations to the modernized, highly technical science that it is today.

His professional service outside of ODNR included advisory roles at the Kirtlandia Society, the American Lung Association, City of Columbus Health Department, Ohio Seismic Hazards Advisory Board, COSI, Cincinnati Museum Center, and the Ohio Historical Society.

During his career, Dr. Hansen published more than fifty maps, journal articles, and other publications; more than 65 Ohio Geology newsletter articles; numerous GeoFacts; and the Catalog of Ohio Earthquakes. He founded the Ohio Seismic Network and spent a lifetime communicating the sciences of geology and paleontology to Ohioans at all levels.
